Seren

Their arrival back to the castle, though not meant to be a grand affair, had seemed to turn into one. Seren imagined that an eastern noble’s carriage hadn’t exactly been the most covert of wagons they could have used for travel. Though she appreciated all the thought that had been put behind it—no doubt orchestrated by Kashir.

The people on the streets cheered, waving to the carriage as it went by. Word of Seren’s disappearance had scattered throughout the kingdom through the soldiers. Though she had helped the people many times over, she had never felt so loved and so seen by them in all her days. Although it all felt a bit over the top, she had to admit, it did feel good.

As they made the final turn toward the castle walls, she let go of Kashir’s hand, pressing her face against the window and gazing out at the gardens she had left behind. Her heart nearly flitted into the heavens when she saw everything still flourishing and vibrant, blossoming big, luscious blooms just as always.

She’d trained the staff well; she now knew that much.

When the carriage rolled to a stop, the door swung open, and a very tired Brajinn stood there, holding out his hand. Seren took it, her cheeks rosy with blush from his gentle touch as he made sure she stepped safely to the ground. As she stood there, she twirled around, taking in everything around her. The sights, the smells, the feel of the sunlight on her skin, the dirt as she wiggled her toes. All things she had taken for granted before and would never do so again.

“Now that we are home, I think that it’s best for us to take you to the healers, just to get looked over,” Brajinn insisted. But Seren knew that time was of the essence, and she had bigger fish to deal with than healers who would find nothing wrong with her.

“No.” Seren shook her head. “What we need to do . . . is go to the war room.”

“The war room?” Kashir cocked an eyebrow. “To what end?”

“These,” Seren said, pulling the discolored parchment pages from her underclothes. “I found this in the longhouse when I chased my double . . .”

“Your double?” Brajinn and Kashir repeated back.

“It’s . . . hard to explain . . .” Seren groaned in frustration. “Nevertheless, what I have in my hand could mean something. We need to sort this out upstairs.”

Seren stumbled off, and the men followed soon after, and she padded her bare feet through the castle until she got to the war room. She set the parchments on the table, the room dark as night, and began to read them as the men filed in.

“Let me get a fire going for light,” Brajinn spoke.

“No, please,” Seren replied. “It’s better this way . . . especially without my glasses.”

“How can you see in the dark?” Brajinn queried, and Seren watched Brajinn look to Kashir for an answer. Kashir shrugging in response.
